Unit 2: Color
Triptych Painting after artist Andy Warhol
Visual Problem: What makes an iconic image? How can I use color to represent this idea in 3 different ways?American Artist Andy Warhol used paint and printmaking to create POP ART. Using images from popular culture (celebrities, commercial products, etc) he would repeat the subject several times in various color schemes and present them together as a finished product.
We will be doing something similar now that we know a little bit about color. Using iconic images we will create triptychs using watercolor paint and 3 different color schemes. Choose your image wisely- as you will have to enjoy it enough to paint it three times!

Process:
1. Find an iconic image- something recognizable, classic, usually representational of something (Eagle= American) 2. Photoshop it- desaturate, cutout filter, limit to 4 colors- PRINT! 3. Transfer image to 5x7 watercolor paper- trace contours using window, or freehand 4. Use LIGHT pencil lines so they don’t ruin your painting 5. You should have 3 finished paintings: o analogous color scheme o warm color scheme o cool color scheme |
Monochromatic Skeleton Painting
Visual Problem:
Discover an interesting section of the human skeleton and portray the form using a monochromatic color scheme, cropping and framing. A typical adult human skeleton has 206 bones! I do not expect you to draw all 206 however. For this lesson, I’d like you to practice “framing” a drawing. We will practice deciding how to zoom in on an area and where to place the edges of your picture plane. Where you place items on the page can change a lot about your artwork. Process: 1. DISCOVER: Using your fingers, create a “viewfinder” to look at areas of the skeleton. Practice zooming in and out on different sections of bones. 2. DECIDE & DRAW: Decide which area you enjoy most and seat yourself in a position to draw this. (If you wish to take a photo with your smartphone and draw from your own seat- feel free) a. Draw your bones using contour lines- no shading b. Remember to sketch LIGHTLY with pencil! 3. COLOR SCHEME: You will be using a MONOCHROMATIC color scheme on your bones, and the background should be the COMPLIMENTARY color of your bones. Example: Purple bones= Yellow background. |
